ATMs in Bukit Lawang can be unreliable and often run out of cash. We highly recommend withdrawing sufficient Indonesian Rupiah (IDR) in Medan or at the airport before traveling to Bukit Lawang. Most local guest houses and tour operators operate on a cash-only basis.

For our standard 1-day or 2-day treks, moderate fitness is sufficient. However, for 3+ day expeditions, you need a high level of physical fitness as the terrain includes steep ravines and slippery forest floors in high humidity. The dry season (May through September) offers the most pleasant trekking conditions with fewer muddy trails. However, the rainforest is beautiful year-round. Even in the “rainy” season, rains are often short, tropical bursts followed by sunshine, so trekking is still entirely possible.

Bukit Lawang village has limited WiFi in guest houses and decent 4G mobile coverage (Telkomsel provider is recommended). Once you enter the National Park on your trek, you will have no mobile signal or internet. Enjoy the true “digital detox” of the jungle!
